Travel behavior during events on an interactive experience map

In short

During my time at the lectorat I researched the travel behavior of eventgoers of the AFAS boulevard. I visualised this data into an experience map. The map illustrates key intervention points aimed at encouraging eventgoers to make more sustainable travel choices.

Travelling to the AFAS boulevard

Amsterdam South East has three major event venues: the Johan Cruijff ArenA, AFAS Live and Ziggo Dome. With the current event venues, offices, Pathé cinema and homes, there can be a peak load of around 100,000 to 150,000 people wanting to enter and leave the area around the same time during events.

On average, 55 to 60% of visitors come by car. In addition to environmental pollution, this causes delays for event visitors, and inconvenience for residents and people working in the area. During my time at CMFSC I analysed the data and visualised into this map. The touch-points show interventions that come from the creative industry.

Translating data

I categorized the research data on a timeline. I did this do find out whether there were patterns.

This way I could see what the most common journey to an event is and how event goers get influenced in making certain travel decisions.

For Stimulansz, knowledge expert within the social domain, I was faced with the challenge of translating the new positioning into a powerful visual identity.

Visualizing data

When hovering over one of the intervention points (stars) concepts that can make this journey greener are shown. These concepts were made by the students from CMD. When clicking on them, you get directed to a bidbook where you can read about the project.

All the concepts are implemented on different points on the timeline. Some concepts focused on providing a greener travel option prior to the ticket purchase of an event, and some concepts focus on educating event goers during an event.
